The guys always put me down and reject me. They say no one would ever want to go out with me...

Being accepted by others is important, especially when you're a teenager, and it's really tough to be rejected. It makes sense that when you are not accepted, you might ask yourself, "Why not?" If it's the guys who are putting you down, you may wonder, "Does this mean something about me? Am I not attractive to guys?" If you've had a bad experience with your father or other significant adult men who have rejected you, you may be super-sensitive to being rejected again. You may feel like no guy could ever really care about you.

Let's be clear about one thing first. No matter what you think, how you look, what your interests are, or anything else, you are valuable and should be treated with respect by everyone. Those who are putting you down just don't get it. They don't understand that what really matters is the person you are on the inside..

Secondly, the boys do not determine whether you are acceptable as a person and as a woman. You are acceptable as a person and as a woman, just the way you are right now. Like everyone else, you are still becoming who you will be. There are things about you that are great and other things that you want to work on, but you do not have to meet others' expectations.

One important thing to remember when someone rejects you is that not all boys, not all men are like that. Don't hate all men because some men have been mean to you. There are other boys and men who do treat women with respect, and who will appreciate you for the person and woman you are and are becoming. (We're not talking about sex here either -- don't trust anyone who says "if you really love me you'll have sex with me"; don't give your body away to someone for a few moments of "being accepted".) We're talking about your inner beauty, your character, your sense of humour....

Part of growing up and becoming an adult is discovering your characteristics and abilities, and realizing the worth and value you have. Real friends are those guys and girls who help you along that journey while accepting you today.
