Everyone deserves to be treated with respect
Everyone has great worth and deserves to be treated with respect. It does not matter if you like certain people or dislike them, know them well or just a little bit, agree or disagree with their beliefs and actions.
In practical terms, treating someone with respect means the following:
* We affirm others' good qualities. * We don't make fun of other people or call them names. We don't tell gay jokes. * We don't join in when our friends make fun of someone else (this is difficult not to do, but important). * We don't talk about others behind their backs, tell lies about them, or tell their secrets. * We allow other people to have different beliefs and make different choices, rather than insisting that they believe and choose the things we do. * We listen carefully and do our best to understand what another person is saying. When we don't understand something, we politely ask for an explanation. For example, "I don't think I understood what you just said. Could you explain it again?" (rather than "What is that supposed to mean?! That doesn't make any sense at all!") * We treat everyone fairly.
